Forgetting What Lies Behind

Forgetting What Lies Behind

Parashat Mattot and Massei

In the closing portions of the book of Bamidbar (Numbers) the tribes of Reuben and Gad request an inheritance East of the Jordan River.

This request brings back remembrances of prior failures of the Children of Israel that led to exile, but their response assures Moses that they will not act according to the ways of their fathers. In doing this, they were, in essence, forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what God was calling them to.

Brothers, I do not regard myself as having taken hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Messiah Yeshua.
