From Death to Life

From Death to Life

Parashat Tazria-Metzora

The Torah portions of Tazria and Metzora present challenging passages about ritual purity and leprosy and hint at elements of God’s redemptive plan. These detailed laws point to how God brings His people from death to life, from exile to His presence.

Biblical leprosy is understood as a spiritual condition that manifestation in a physical malady. The Sages derive from Scripture that evil speech, pride, lack of care for others, and other heart issues are the root causes, which aligns with Yeshua’s teaching about defilement coming from within. Just as individuals with tzara’at experience exile from community, when the nation of Israel walked in this manner they faced national exile.

The cleansing process involves multiple stages over eight days, using elements like two birds, cedar wood, and scarlet thread that point to deliverance from death to life. Yeshua’s healing of the leper in Mark 1 was evidence of Him being the Messiah and the imagery throughout these portions points to His redemptive work.
