Overcoming the Past

Overcoming the Past

Parashat Vayetze

This portion begins with Jacob having fled for his life, leaving his home and his family behind. At the place where Isaac had once been offered up, having reached a place of complete loss, Jacob has an encounter with God that renews his hope.

This encounter brings a transformation, and Jacob leaves behind his past of deception and begins anew, walking in righteousness in all his dealings. God blesses him as He had promised, building up Jacob’s family and wealth, and calls him back to the land of Israel.

…one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
