The Rock From Which You Were Hewn

The Rock From Which You Were Hewn

Parashat Pinchas

Phineas (Pinchas) was the grandson of Aaron the High Priest and he was the grandson of Jethro, a former priest of Midian. When he slew Zimri and Cozbi the people called him the grandson of an idol worshiper, but God did not agree. God called him the grandson of Aaron because his zealousness brought peace between God and the Children of Israel.

Phineas’ zealous action was good in the sight of God because he did not act based on his own feelings and opinions. He was able to set aside his fleshly desires and act with a pure heart according to the will of God. As such, he was acting in accordance with Aaron’s nature, according to the nature of the rock from which he was hewn.

In this time of trial in our nation, we as believers in Yeshua are called to act according to the nature of Yeshua, the Rock from which we were hewn. We are to act from a foundation of love and desire for peace between God and man.

Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, who seek the Lord: Look to the rock from which you were hewn and to the quarry from which you were dug. Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; When he was but one I called him, then I blessed him and multiplied him.”

Isaiah 51:1-2
