Parashat Nasso
The portion title ‘Nasso’ means take an account, counting the people, but its root nasah also means to uplift, showing that God doesn’t merely count His people but lifts them higher. This divine desire for elevation is seen throughout Scripture as God draws His children from darkness into His marvelous light.
The Nazirite vow in Numbers 6 provides a unique opportunity for anyone to draw near to God. Through three specific restrictions, avoiding all grape products, not cutting hair, and avoiding contact with dead bodies, any man or woman could experience the same level of consecration as the high priest. The uncut hair became their crown, called ‘nezer’ in Hebrew, the same word used for the high priest’s golden crown inscribed with ‘Holy to the Lord.’ The physical restrictions were for the purpose of passionately pursuing God’s presence.
Within God’s system, He gives various callings and responsibilities to groups and individuals. God calls His people to unity without forcing uniformity, as demonstrated when the twelve tribes brought identical gifts but presented them on separate days and for different symbolic purposes. Each contribution mattered individually to God, showing how the body of Messiah works together while maintaining uniqueness.
Today, God is looking for those willing to set aside legitimate pleasures for something greater, walking in unity, and counting all things as loss compared to the excellence of knowing Yeshua, our Messiah.
