Parashat Vayechi
As Israel was descending to Egypt, God encountered Jacob and told him to go, but that God would bring him back to the land he had been promised.
As his life drew to a close, and Jacob was preparing to bless his children, he asked Joseph to bury him in the cave at Machpelah in the land of Canaan. In one aspect of this request, Jacob was seeking to determine if Joseph was content living in Egypt…if royalty and the riches of Egypt had taken his heart.
Though Joseph and his brothers prospered in the land of Egypt, they knew their true home was in the Land God had promised to them in Canaan.
So too, are we to prosper in the places God has given us, always remembering where our true home is.
All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.
